In the 1989 Batman film by Tim Burton, there is a scene where the Joker throws a massive street party to bribe the Gotham City residents as to who they trust in relation to the City and its well-being. The song which is played in the background is by Prince called....'Trust'. Worth a listen.
Last week it was great to meet with a good many of our parish youth and children's workers. The theme that was the link to the whole meeting was 'Trust' and the scripture from John 14v 1-6. We began a journey and for me it was one of beginning and developing trust in our partnership in ministry together.
We also heard an audio excerpt from Mark Yaconnelli of Contemplative Youth Ministry fame, which focussed on our trusting in God and not our programmes. Having had the privilege to have met with Mark in the past, it is great to know that he will be ministering at the Youthwork Summit in Manchester next month.
I highly commend the Summit as a way of resourcing, as well as the wider 'Youthwork the Conference' in November in Eastbourne. Please make the effort to attend and be part of the bigger picture of wider Youthwork and ministry's UK community.
Beyond 'first contact' in Youthwork parlance, it is developing appropriate trust that is one that we might consider and revisit. Entering into the world of people, whether they be young or older is a privilege and not an automatic right.
We talk a lot about building relationships, but trust is the glue that gives our relationships the integrity needed to be developed and sustained or even survive!
What takes time to build can be destroyed in a moment due to lack of wisdom, indiscretion, lack of preparation or planning affecting our individual and corporate work. With 'Trust' comes more prayer and discerning to signpost the way to the Father through Christ with inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Let's be trust builders within our various settings.

Yes, thanks Dean for that meeting. Trust takes investment, and time for the “interest” to accrue. Thanks for the early investments you’ve already made. Alex.
