Advent is an interesting time. It is the time before Christmas that, for those who engage the liturgical calendar, is the true countdown. This time of 'coming' is sometimes more profound than we think. Having seen various versions of Christmas lights including London and those around the Diocese, now the 'under starters orders' is truly over and the countdown has begun!
What am I waiting for?
This might be a key question for those who are resetting and re-imagining Advent this time around.
In a microwave culture that wants things in an instance, the lack of waiting is an art that seems in some far-away country. With instant communication, instant whatever, one of the things that gives us perspective is 'The Wait'. The wait for a meal, train, bus or car, friend or loved-one, gives us key moments where we need to just pause, punctuated with gratitude.
Advent helps us get into a more contemplative rhythm that is countercultural to all the rushing around. It is sad to hear people shattered through the rush and stress of the commercial hype.
At the recent Youthwork Summit in Manchester we were encouraged to join the 'slow club' encouraged by Mark Yaconelli. It is not a surprise that some choose this time as one of retreat and having significant 'wait' time.
Advent is a time to pause, making sure we wait for the gift of all gifts.
Wait with me, wait on each other, wait on Him who is so needed at this time.
Wait, as one of the prophets waiting and telling of the one who is to come. I am reminded at this time of Isaiah chapter 40; it seems particularly appropriate for the times that we live in. Using the King James translation verse 31:
'But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.'
I shall be musing a couple more times before the Youth Service takes its break before the Christ Child appears.
The wait continues.
Peace
Dean
