The readings in the Lectionary today are again, so appropriate. Please read these in the light of the events over the weekend and take time to reflect and let the Holy Spirit speak to us.
These last few days have been busy in the start of my time here. Not even a month in and I have met two bishops, a third later today. I have had some great moments with colleagues who have done and continue to do amazing work like Matt Summerfield (Urban Saints), Chris Curtis (Youthscape) and Chris Evans (STEP) and their teams - all who have a passion to see the relevance of Christ working through the lives of young people in what they do. Please pray for them and take a look at their respective resources if you have not done so already.
Then came the weekend - young people at the heart of breaking news. One famous and one infamous with other young people involved near and far. Connected by loss.
I am sure that if it wasn't, the horrific and heart-breaking news from Norway with those young persons lives cut short was just another 'Why?' moment for us all to ponder on and try to make sense in our delicate existence. Please continue to pray for the nation of Norway at this time for all concerned.
Then........Saturday and Amy Winehouse who suddenly dies - R.I.P. Again, many things have been and will be said in the coming days and is also a talking point.
Our prayers again go out to those closest to Amy, particularly her parents, close friends, loved ones and fans. Many people connected with her artistry coming from a space of her own experiences as a young woman. We joined in the moments of song where we could at a safe distance through our various ways of accessing music.
One of my favourite tracks from the 'Back to Black' album which she won her 5 Grammy's for is My Tears Dry on their Own. A modern anthem of relationship break-up from a young woman's perspective. You can find the lyrics here (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/amywinehouse/tearsdryontheirown.html)
Friday prior to the coming news, I was with the planning group of the Lock In events (see here). Thanks to the team and those supporting - much appreciated. The theme is from the Gospel of John, chapter 10 and verse 10.
After this weekend's events, I am more convinced of this theme being really important for us who journey with young people and relevant both to the significant adults who are present and engaged. Think of this in the light of the media events of the weekend.
This is from the Message translation:
'A thief is only there to steal, kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of'
Dean
