Remembering 9/11

Many people of the generation above me asked 'Do you remember where you were when Kennedy got shot?'

The question for my generation is 'Where were you when 9/11 happened?'

I happened to be at home and it was Radio5 and BBC News 24 that were my preference for the unfolding shocking scenes. 4 days later for a scheduled holiday to Greece and going through unprecedented security at the Airport and then seeing NATO warships on alert in the Mediterranean Sea was telling me life was and had changed. For the U.S. and those entering her borders, there were long queues, shoes off and cockpits that were out of bounds. All necessary with a security footing negotiating a new phase of worldwide terrorism of a different kind. We still live with the consequences today, 10 years on. A time in which I have since had the privilege of having become a parent.

I would like to bring to your attention a colleague and friend from New York who is a youthworker. His name is Jeremy Del Rio. Jeremy is a passionate brother who loves his city.

I share with you his reflections on 9/11. Worth showing your youthgroup. Check out his and also the Urban Youthworkers Institute who I have had the profound privilege of sharing life and work with in 2008 and 2009 in Los Angeles and London.

May we remember those who died and their loved ones.

May we reflect on the bigger picture of our world in our intercessions on Sunday wherever we are - the 10th anniversary of that day of 21st century infamy - known simply as 9/11. We still carry the pain to this day; the world changed and so did we.

Peace

Dean
