Lent is now fast approaching and here is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and young people to 'do the words of Jesus'. That is actually a big ask. We read them all the time (hopefully!) but often close the book, or switch off the device we are reading from and easily forget what has been read, or never quite give it time to think through how we/I might engage with the word fully. We are often hearing about people who seem to have made a big difference to others, but I wonder if the extra-ordinary would become the norm if we each acted on one thing that Jesus calls us to do! To start by encouraging young people (and ourselves) to read, learn, pray and do just one day could actually change their (and your) lives. The tag line on all this is "Are you up for it?" which I suppose is the big question. If you don't give it a go, you'll never know.
Be encouraged, get signed up, follow the simple guidelines on the Youth sheet and pray that God will work amongst your young people - and step back!
December 2009:
I suppose the idea of setting out a challenge is to get as many people as possible going for it to get it done. It is easy these days to push stuff to one side and if the church offers a challenge can't be much to it anyway.
Bottom line of this one is wheteher we each dare to make a difference - in our own lives, our communities, in the world ... by living the words of Jesus.
That is actually tough - to show love, not hate. To bless rather than curse. We always think we are the worst so far, but if you look people struggled to follow what Jesus said when he was around on earth - over 2000 years ago. The challenge is for us all, including young people to read the verse, learn it, pray about it and then do something to make a difference.
Check out the challenge website and sign up to receive a daily email or text this Lent. We will send you a verse from the Bible which records something Jesus said.
Find suggestions and links to help you. Share what you have learned and done, by posting your comments and videos.
The verses are all from Luke's Gospel. Lent is the period of six weeks before Easter in 2010 it begins on 17th February
Over the next few weeks we shall be adding ways in which you can get your young people involved. Keep a check out and let us know any good ideas for sharing.
