The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Reflections on finishing well. When I announced 6 months ago that I was leaving my post as Youth Worker, the person who was holding the light at the end of the tunnel suddenly remembered the purpose of their job and found the ‘on' switch. I know I'm not alone in feeling hopeless about a job situation, I just didn't think it would happen to me, and consequently had not thought about a coping strategy.

The ‘R’ Word

Prior to the week for prayer of Christian unity, I am compelled to write about a subject that causes discomfort, but can hardly be ignored in our work with young people. This is something that I have experienced first hand and so I declare an interest at the beginning and so objectivity might be questioned. However, saying this, very few people in the Christian Youth Ministry world have said much about this and this is something that needs to be worked upon in my humble opinion.

2012 Business as usual? Epiphany

I don't know how you feel about entering into a New Year, but I am glad the feast of the Epiphany is here, celebrated on the 6th January. The word Epiphany, means 'revelation' and if ever we needed a revelation then I would say that this year is probably it. There is much we are told to be anxious for this coming year and if we had a complete media silence, we would still feel the vibes from the various people we know or their demeanour and body-language.

‘Intentional’ Nativity

My last musing this Advent and for 2011 is focussing on another word. 'Intentional'. The advent story is full of moments around being intentional. The whole journey towards the nativity is one of choosing to be intentional. A definition of this word is to purpose to. However, within the intentionality there are positive and negative moments as the drama unfolds.

Advent is an interesting time. It is the time before Christmas that, for those who engage the liturgical calendar, is the true countdown. This time of 'coming' is sometimes more profound than we think. Having seen various versions of Christmas lights including London and those around the Diocese, now the 'under starters orders' is truly over and the countdown has begun!
