Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to write a post to share something of my experience as part of the Young Adult Observers' group at General Synod in York.
Being able to observe the debates was highly thought-provoking and I found it gave me a greater understanding of the different convictions held by people within the Church of England and also the varying concerns of members of Synod. It was interesting to see Synod in action and the legal processes and requirements and whilst, I think all would agree, that there were moments when things were a little frustrating, there were also many positive moments of fortitude, compassion and creativity.
It was also good to have the opportunity to chat with members of Synod, gaining insights into different perspectives and a greater awareness of the breadth and diversity, and beauty and richness within that breadth and diversity, of the Church of England.
We were joined by both the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York for lunch on Sunday, where a wide variety of topics were discussed and I think we were all grateful for this opportunity and encouraged that the Church of England is keen for young adults to be represented in the workings of the national Church.
Each day there was a service of Holy Communion and morning worship and evening worship, with Sunday's Eucharist taking place in York Minster, ensuring the synodical debates were surrounded by prayer and providing an opportunity to listen to God and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
All in all, it was a very worthwhile weekend. I was both challenged and encouraged and left with lots to think about and my understanding of the Church widened and deepened. Members of Synod were very happy to engage with the Young Adult Observers' group and I am very grateful to have had this opportunity. I would really advocate anyone aged 18-24 to participate in future and anyone aged 16-22 in St. Albans Diocese to seriously consider and pray about being on Diocesan Synod.
Yours in Christ,
Rebekah
