Hello Everyone!
On Friday, I will be heading up to York to be part of the General Synod Young Observers' Group.
General Synod is the national assembly of the Church of England. It is made up of three houses; bishops, clergy and laity and is responsible for the passing and revising of legislation, relations with other churches, finances, liturgy used in services and also considering any other matter of religious or public prominence.
Members of General Synod reflect the rich diversity of the Church of England and CEYC have three representatives who are able to, and frequently do, speak at General Synod.
The focus of the July Synod this year is the debate surrounding women bishops. Several years ago, Synod agreed that women should be allowed to become bishops and tasked a committee with drawing up a measure that enabled female bishops but at the same time provided for those members of the Church of England who could not accept that authority of a female bishop. This measure has now been drafted and it is hoped that as many members of Synod as possible will feel it addresses their concerns, whether they are in support or opposition, of women becoming bishops.
I am looking forward to the opportunity of experiencing something of the wider context of the Church as the matters discussed and debated at General Synod affect the mission of the whole Church of England and also illuminate the historical traditions of the Church of England.
It is both encouraging and challenging to hear news or views from other churches, other parishes, other dioceses, other denominations and it is through this sharing of news and of views that the Church grows and changes and develops. I think it is also the same with us - through sharing and discussing with others, we grow in our faith. So, be interested, excited and challenged by the affairs of the wider Church and also by opportunities to share and discuss closer to home - youth group and house group discussions and post-service coffee conversations never fail to challenge me and help me grow in my faith.
Many Cathedrals across the country are organising a day of prayer for the debate on women bishops. It is not specific to people on either side of the argument but instead a reminder that at the heart of the Church of England is a focus on serving the mission and will of God; even where we disagree, we can be united in prayer and together seek the guidance of God.
Have a great week,
Rebekah
